A new report on immigration from the Missouri House is making the staggering claim that abortion leads to a shortage in the American workforce and thus leads to illegal immigration to fill the positions that should have been held by these aborted people. First off - I am not making this up. This is not a joke post. Secondly, the report was created by a "Republican-led legislative panel" so considering the Republican stand on abortion, you can be sure that THEY are not making it up - they truly believe that abortion leads to illegal immigration. Employers aren't begging people to come work illegally. They're perhaps begging people to come work under the table to avoid withholding taxes or to come work for dirt cheap but the problem there is not a shortage of American workers, it's a shortage of employers willing to pay a living wage and pay taxes on & benefits to their employees. According to the article, National Right to Life estimates 47 billion abortions have been performed since 1973. Committee chairman Ed Emery says "If you kill 44 million of your potential workers, it's not too surprising we would be desperate for workers." Let's see...if we had 44 million more people, we'd probably be more desperate for health care too. Probably more desperate for welfare. We'd probably have a larger population of unfit mothers, drug users, kids crammed in schools, and uhm...unemployed Americans! Since all six of the Democrats on the panel refused to sign the report (one called it "embarassing") and all 10 Republicans signed it, this report clearly smacks of partisanism. Either all of the Republicans are flaming idiots or they are just signing whatever comes through to their "Republican Led Committee" inbox. One Republican panel member, says the linked article, contends that he "didn't recall the report linking abortion and illegal immigration." Unfortunately my Google-fu is as weak as the AP writer's is who broke the story, so we won't be able to read the report ourselves to see if the Republicans possibly came up with a million other reasons why illegal immigration is a growing problem in the US or if they have just settled on abortion. They might as well kill two unwanted birds with one stone, eh? What do you think? Are the Republicans crazy? Are the Dems just trying to make them look crazy? Of all the works of the Bible, Ecclesiastes stands out as the most profound, probably because it is unlike any other chapter in either the Old or the New Testament. Written post-Exile, likely composed by a single writer, it is the greatest of all wisdom literature. It distills the essence of a deeply Hebraic worldview, which is why I prefer to refer to it by its Hebrew name, Koheleth, which means roughly "speaker to an assembly." What sets it apart from everything else in the Bible is its focus on mortality and the struggle of the here and now, rather than the otherworldly paradise to come. It preaches what are essentially pagan concepts, having more in common with the Stoics in many parts than with the early Jews or nascent Christians, although it is at its core a Jewish work. The writing is evocative and sonorous in the King James translation; a worthy rendering of what are universal truths orated by an idiosyncratic personality. I want to gesture at why Koheleth is one of the most important pieces of writing ever set down and why it remains a personal touchstone for my own life. Life is presented in Koheleth as a wonderous, but ephemeral gift, and the more one understands this, the more sorrowful and painful life becomes. This lies directly in constrast with the Christian tradition, which has always been more concerned with prudential wisdom, acting as a guide to good life and good works, its focus on how to maintain the straight and narrow path that leads to the Gates of Heaven. Christ's life is something to be emulated, serving as a guide for the Christian on how to live. Catholics have refined that instinct by creating constellations of saints, each serving as specific models for the believer. There is a "total wisdom" to be captured in the Christian tradition (with the exception of early gnostic writings and gospels), there is a final and complete wisdom that is excrutiatingly difficult to achieve, but resides as an endpoint and goal. The Hebraic wisdom, reaching its apotheosis in Koheleth, invokes a much different conception of wisdom. Wisdom, rather than being a propulsive force that pushes one towards a telos, is a murky pool that deserves endless and eternal rumination. Fate and fortune, randomness and chance, absent from any other part of the Bible, are embedded in Koheleth, introducing a painful awareness that life is often beyond are control, incomprehensible and remote, endless, yet brief. It is, as Harold Bloom puts it, the wisdom of annihiliation and Koheleth is the only sustained treatment of this essential truth. The first verse speaks more eloquently to Koheleth's designs than I ever could and I lay it here in its entirety and encourage the reader to speak it aloud, for it has the cadence of golden tongued oration.

This is harrowing language, obsessed with the dual and dueling impulses of life: to quest for knowledge and to succumb to death. One engenders the other, making this intertwining the very core of all meaning and creating the most fundamental paradox that lies at the hearts of all men: our greatest mandate while alive is to gain wisdom, but the more we accomplish this goal, the closer to annihiliation we arrive. I have ruminated on this passage many times and always find it illuminating. I want to return to an exegesis of Koheleth in the future, as this opening verse merely introduces a more sustained and particularized discussion of these initial concepts. But there is ultmately little I can say that will be of value, for all is vanity and the world neither remembers nor cares.

In a recent article conservatives are whining that religious freedom is under attack because of gay marriage. You might be saying to yourself, "that is freaking stupid, these guys are dickweeds." Well that’s true, but they are claiming that there are several instances were religious people have been punished for speaking out against gay marriage. In one example, Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich in June fired his appointee to the Washington area transit board after the board member referred to homosexuals as "persons of sexual deviancy." Apparently their reasoning here was that because the board member’s religion says that homosexuality is wrong it is okay for him to publicly state that opinion without any consequences. Of course if the man was Muslim and stated that his religion thought that American women were whores and should be stoned, I doubt that they would be protesting his firing. The conservatives are completely wrong on this issue. Firstly the appointee was a public servant for the public transit board. Being a public servant you can’t openly discriminate against people. What if his religion said blacks were inferior to whites, does that mean he should be able to pass regulations for blacks to sit at the back of the bus? If it was a private company he could then have whatever retarded opinion he wanted, but as a public employee paid by taxpayers, some of whom are gay, that kind of attitude cannot be tolerated. For some reason conservatives are associating religious freedom with being able to not perform the required tasks at your job. For example they have made a big stink about pharmacists being able to refuse to give birth control based on religious objections. If you can’t perform the duties of being a pharmacist then don’t be one. That’s like an Amish person being an electrician then coming over to your house and refusing to fix anything because his religion forbids technology. It’s just plain stupid. In the 1960’s I’m sure there were lots of people who were complaining that their freedoms were being infringed upon by having to serve black people at their restaurants. However times and attitudes have changed and now someone saying that would be publicly chastised. Being gay is not some sexual deviancy and a person’s sexual orientation should not be a determining factor in their rights. Social Conservatives seek to perpetuate the idea that being gay is a social taboo in order to promote their own agendas and keep control. However social attitudes continue to change and will not be held back and soon these “Conservatives� will be looked at as social dinosaurs much like those who supported racial discrimination back in the 1950’s. �

We told him that he didn't fit the criteria for the Klub but he kept showing up at Dante's house and saying things like "I thought you were understanding! Either way, we had to change the night so he would stop coming. And, Dante's mom told him that if he shows up again, she will call the police. Thanks Dante's mom! So, in the front row from right to left: Dante, Tyron, and Me (Jamal. I really wanted to hold the sword cause swords are cool!) In the back is Tyron's dad (He is not in the club. I mean, he's not even gay. He has a son! And we told him not to have a gun, it sets a bad image for us! But it's his house and his rules...), Lamont (who is behind Tyron, we should have worked that one out better, you can't even see him!) and Jerome.
