Most interviews consist of fluffy questions like, "so what inspired you to write this book" followed by 60 seconds of uninterrupted marketing while the interviewer casts loving gazes the author's way.The most shocking thing for me, though, is that Stewart has actually read Matthews' book and come up with his own, very informed, opinion about it, Imitrex For Sale. 2. Jon Stewart isn’t doing better journalism than journalists. Journalists spend time researching specific stories and share what they have learned. People who talk to authors on TV and to ask them “fluffy” questions are anchormen/anchorwomen. Their job is to look trustworthy/pretty and get you to sit through the commercial break to hear/see them again.

You could say Jon Stewart is doing better editorialism than editorialists. But he himself is an editorialist, so I guess you should just say he is the best out of all of the TV editorialists. But lots of editorialists write books and ask well-thought-out questions. What makes Jon Stewart better than all the other editorialists is that he has a knack for doing what all editorialists try to do: He makes the world around him seem like a simple place with simple answers and he makes those who disagree with him seem just as simple.

But no one asked me so I will just lurk away. :) Thanks for the clips!

  4. I saw these interviews too and was impressed with Jon one of the few actual journalists left on TV shame he’s only doing whats considered to be almost a spoof news show that contains more news and better reporting than any mainstream channel !
I am from the UK and the standard here is terrible even the so called independent bbc has a very heavy bias on all they’re reporting !
    Oh well
by the way first post wooo !

  5. I think Jon Stewart is very able and intelligent, but self-righteous and prone to conspiracy theory. He does read, but he’s the kind of guy who because he read it in a book and it accords with his own opinions, it must be correct.

That having been said, it’s a very good thing he is reading the books before the interviews. But there is a sort of question you can ask before you ask a hard hitting one, a softer sort of question which asks for not merely a more expansive answer on what one reads, but takes the viewpoint of the author literally for just a brief moment before disagreeing. I know he looks like he’s doing that in these interviews, but trust me – when I’m asking professors with whom I disagree about their worldview, I let them expand as much as possible and only ask the questions I have when their view is totally clear.

There is a way to read in order to fight, and I don’t know how much I like that.

  8. Most of us watch Jon because he’s funny, intelligent, and Very well-informed.
    Often they dont have to
say a word. They show tape that speaks volumes without their help.

I watch it because they deliver what I call the ‘Truth’

    (Sorry Fox ‘News’ !)

  9. If by Jon Stewart you mean the people that write for Jon Stewart, then yes.

I don’t think he reads every book… he probably has people read it for him and then tell him good questions to ask.

    Just my opinion, though.

  10. Jason, I don’t think you realize that John raising a “very fundamental question” isn’t a compliment. It’s like saying you raised a very basic question that anyone with elementary knowledge of the topic should already know. So that’s actually a point against him instead of for him unlike how you presented it.

But I love JS, and have noticed too that he often will actually take the time to read the book.

  11. Rod, thanks for the comment. I have to respectfully disagree. When Camus said “Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy,” I don’t think he meant it was elementary knowledge anyone should already know.

  12. COme on people, he’s just entertainment. He also writes a lot of his own show, and picks his guests… so of course he reads the books. News anchors and 99% of other talk shows/newscasts have other people arranging the guests and topics, and all they have to do is read off a teleprompter.

This person is giving John Stewart WAY too much credit. He’s still not delivering news, which sadly, a lot of people think he is.

    Jon Stewart is not news!!!!
    October 13th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
  13. I see, however that is totally different context than of the Alan Greenspan interview that we are referring to. However, even there Camus is saying it’s a very basic question of philosophy, but means that it’s philosophy that is the enigma and that’s why there is no definitive answer.

Why do you think John says “Should I leave?” after Greenspan says it’s a very fundamental question then jokingly wipes the sweat from his forehead with his tie? Further, John goes on to make other jokes like, “Um..sure I knew that!” while he is answering the question showing that he really is over his head. Synonyms of fundamental are the words elementary, basic, and rudimentary, and this is exactly what Greenspan was saying. And it really is a very elementary question about the subject and is something you would surely hear on day one of a finance 101 course.

There is no way Greenspan was calling it very complex question like how you fashioned it to be, when that is the very opposite meaning of the word fundamental!

  14. Stewart does not read all the books; he has readily admitted to at least one author that he didn’t read the book. He does read several of them, and with as many breaks they take (sometimes for up to two weeks) I think he has time catching up to upcoming authors. He also has a team that I’m sure also reads and feeds him lines and questions. None of this detracts from what he is very good at doing – getting a decent interview that doesn’t rehash what the author has already said on other people’s shows.

  15. He seems better because he read the book like his editors. Anchorman/Women on the other hand don’t read the book (don’t have time? Lazy?).

Jon stewart also generally seems more informed because his work is less government censored. He has more to gain rediculing the government then he has to lose (by say, getting cut off from government events and having less interviews).

Yes, stewart doesn’t know much about economics.

Jon stewart has many ideas i agree with, such as Jerusalem, international city. And his line of work keeps him more informed then i could ever be. But again, part of why he looks smart is because media anchors have no choice but to be dumb.

Sidebar – You really, really shouldn’t trust the media. The Iraq war opened my eyes to why the US and other countries aren’t tied for first in press freedom.

  16. 2 posts – as this one takes a differant tack.

To the people that say jon stewart doesn’t give real news, is just entertainment, etc. Realize that really, nobody is giving you real news. Jon stewarts viewers are more educated then other viewers of some major news networks. But really, jon stewart still isn’t that objective. I think that anyone that will only say things if it results in more people listening, aren’t going to give you the best source of news. Want to learn about global warming? Read scientific articles. Thats my opinion on the issue.

  17. One thing that puts Jon Stewart head and shoulders above just about any other interviewer or talk show host is that he listens well to the interviewee. He is certainly familiar with the books (whether he reads them or not, he certainly has a good grasp of the material) and beyond the questions that he asks, he listens to the responses.
As with his interview the other night with Lynne Cheney, he changed course in the interview because he thought it was not appropriate to ask questions of her that related more to her husband’s policies. However, when she answered a subsequent question with republican talking points, Jon was able to speak directly to her answer rather than focus on some predetermined series of questions.

I would say that Jon Stewart is the most sincere and most skilled listener on television and that is why his show is successful and why the news stories and interviews are excellent and get through to far more interesting (and truthful) information than any other show on television.

  18. Thanks everyone for all the comments – we at Unsought really do appreciate it, even when you don’t agree with us. Responding again to Rod, I still have to disagree with you – from the little I know of Greenspan’s life, I would bet that he has spent many hours pondering that question himself. This was a guy who wrote in favor of the gold standard and hung out with Ayn Rand. He probably found it fascinatingly ironic to be put in charge of an institution he once probably considered counterproductive and anti-capitalist.

I would also just say that Greenspan’s tone indicated surprise at the directness and usefulness of Jon’s question. But that’s just my subjective take.

  19. Regarding authors shilling books on the Daily Show, I think it is obvious when Jon has read the books. I think he is unique in that respect.

I’d like to point out Jon Stewart’s guest appearance on CNN’s Crossfire which lead CNN’s President CNN, Jonathan Klein to cancel the show. Stewart was equally critical of Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala, and his honest commentary lead to the show’s cancellation.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmj6JADOZ-8

Stewart seems equally willing to make fun of everyone who offers an opportunity for a funny joke, regardless of their political affiliation.

Stewart’s (and the Daily Show’s) have a supposedly liberal bias. Frankly, I think both the Democrats and Republicans are both equally guilty of corroding our Democratic process. If Republican’s are the butt of more jokes on the Daily Show, I think it is more a case of opportunity than boas.

  20. Jon Stewart is one of the most intelligent and articulate people on TV in any category. The Daily Show has more useful news content in a half hour than you’ll see on any so-called news channel (Fox in particular).
If he doesn’t read a particular book, he’s up front about it. I have seen him get more real answers out of people in 10 minutes than anyone else would in a 1 hour “special.” I have also seen him take people to task for what they’ve said, done or written.

The fact that he’s hosting a “spoof” news show doesn’t detract from his credibility, it just means you get to bypass the superficial veneer so prevalent in today’s news.

Jane (first commenter) is right, JS should be our next president. I would certainly vote for him.

  23. You idiot, Jon Stewart doesn’t read crap. He’s a talking head just like the rest of them. He has a staff that read this stuff for them, he gets on stage, does gimmick, (which happens to be a supposedly well-informed non-media media personality) and gets all the hoorah’s and hooray’s for it all.

Do you know he is quoted in Time every week? Do you know all the Democratic candidates for President have quoted either him or Colbert to inspire a laugh. Its not flattery – they all know what the TV game is about.

  24. Ben, just some helpful advice: I’d take your comment a little more seriously if you hadn’t opened with “you idiot.” I think it’s clear that Stewart has read the book before most of these interviews. I also think the Daily Show is a bit too complex and subtle to write off as on big gimmick.
