Apple didn’t invent the iPod?

I found an interesting article today that says the acutal inventor of the iPod is not Apple but some furniture salesman named Kane Kramer from the UK.  Apparently his invention was patented in 1979 (I believe he calls himself a revolutionary) but since he couldn’t afford to pay the costs to keep the patent, it fell to public domain where Apple more than likely found it and gobbled it up .  I do admit, it’s a great design and years ahead of it’s time.

I am borrowing this picture from his site that shows his early patent drawings.

What I also find interesting is that no mention of this guy would have ever come up if Burst Patents hadn’t tried to cash in on Apple’s sucess by trying to claim the iPod violated it’s own patents.  In Apple’s defence they said, wait, no, you don’t have the patent, we stole it (legally) from this British Bloke over here.  Oh, and thanks for the good idea, buddy, here’s a free iPod for your trouble!

Too bad his iPod broke after less than a year.  I feel kinda bad for this guy, I mean, if he had been able to hold onto his patent would we all be listening to music on our Kane Digital Audio Player?  Or would Apple have found another public domain patent to copy? It’s always interesting to me how these things turn out.  Any comments?

Kirby Midi, pretty cool

A nerdy little video. I really always like it when you can see pictures in music. I just think it’s cool.

Radiohead’s In Rainbows - Good Album, Terrible User Experience

A couple of weeks ago the esteemed Mr. Wallz mentioned that Radiohead was giving their next album away for free - sort of. The deal is that you can pay any amount you want for the MP3 version, from $0 on up. They are not going through iTunes or Amazon or anyone else and are selling direct from the album’s website.

I went, I bought, I listened. The verdict? Good album, incredibly terrible website. Seriously, the site looks and acts like something that crawled from the depths of 1998, escaping some doomed graphic artist’s college portfolio and wreaking havok on unsuspecting downloaders everywhere.

Here’s a screenshot of the registration screen. Too many fields, and too many required fields. Do they really need my mobile phone number?

Radiohead needs to know your personal details

Yes, the entire web site looks like that. It’s like someone asked their 4-year old to draw a rainbow in Microsoft Paint and then saved and re-saved it as a jpeg 100 times.

Flute Beatboxing

Okay, I know I have been lazy and not writing my posts like a good girl but Shin Megami Tensai Persona 3 is the best game of my life. Ever. No better game. Well, at least I think so. Right now, so stuck on playing it nonstop that you just get quick posts of videos I found on the internet. And no dissing this guy, you can’t play the flute and you can’t beat box so you can’t make fun of him. I think he’s cool.

VMA Review

Well yesterday were the the MTV Video Music Awards which featured a bunch of rich and famous celebrities partying and having more fun then you ever will. The big news was Britney Spears comeback at the beginning of the show. Of course in traditional crazy Britney fashion she totally bombed. First off she lip synced to her new song which apparently she didn’t even know the words too, performed a horrible routine that looked like she was going to topple over several times and also featured sexy paunch.

A lot of people are saying its unfair to criticize her for her appearance because she has had to kids, but considering 99.9% of Britney’s success was do to her looks and not musical talent I think it’s a fair criticism. Also nobody told her to have two kids with a wanna be rapper back up dancer.

Worst Album Covers Ever Created

I know this is a little lazy, but the following link was the first site that I stumbled upon this morning which was totally awesome. My personal favorite is a tie between “The Handless Organist” and “The Turntable Slave”, both wrong on so many levels.

Everybody’s Baby Got Back

The year was 1992. Although we didn’t know it at the time, America was on the tipping point of a major paradigm shift in fashion, music, and body image. For years, Cosmo had been telling women that they were fat, and a self-reinforcing stereotype of beauty required that there be little, if any, junk in the trunk if a woman was going to be considered attractive.

Sir Mix-a-Lot burst upon the scene with his seminal song and video, “Baby Got Back.” Watch the video below and marvel at the audacity, the boldness of his declaration: “I like big butts and I cannot lie.”

“Baby Got Back” has gone on to be one of the most frequently covered songs of all time. You may have noticed this if you’ve ever gone to a bar with karaoke. Baby Got Back is almost inevitably sung. This retrospective is not, however, about the drunk and deeply embarrassing crooning of your uncle about his anaconda. There have been many skillful reinterpretations of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s masterpiece that we will examine today.
